EV, DV, and OV SSL Certificate – Unveiled the Difference

The EV SSL certificate is the best, most secure, and most reliable form of SSL certificate. While DV and OV are technically very similar, there are some key differences between them that make SSL EV certificates the best choice for your business.

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is a cryptographic protocol used by a server to establish an encrypted connection with a client, usually via the internet. This guarantees the security and respectability of information sent between the two gatherings.  An SSL certificate is essentially a digital document that provides you with proof that you are who you say you are online by showing users that they can trust your website.

DV SSL Certificate

The Domain Validated (DV) certificate is less expensive than an EV certificate, but it does not provide the same level of validation. With this type of certificate, only the domain name is verified, so if someone were to register their domain with your DV certificate, they could pretend that they were actually you!

This type of certificate does not require third-party verification, so it is cheaper and faster than other types of certificates, but it is not as secure as an SSL EV certificate because it cannot verify who owns every single website on its server.

EV SSL Certificate

The Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate is the highest level of security that you can get on your website. With an EV certificate, you will see a green address bar and the company name in the browser’s address bar. This makes it simpler for clients to recognize your site as genuine and dependable. The SSL EV certificate also includes a company seal and the company name next to the padlock symbol. These features help customers trust that they are dealing with a reputable business.

OV SSL Certificate

Companies use OV SSL Certificates to secure their websites and protect them from unauthorized access. They’re also known as Organization Validation (OV) SSL certificates because they’re designed for trusted companies.

When you visit a website secured with an OV SSL Certificate, you’ll see the green padlock icon in your browser’s URL bar and information about the certificate displayed below the address bar. The green color indicates that this site is trusted by someone other than you: it’s been verified as legitimate by a third party.

Among all the above three SSL certificates, the most commonly used one is the SSL EV certificate.

Why EV SSL Certificate?

This type of certificate has a high level of validation and trustworthiness because it’s been verified by an authorized third party who has performed extensive tests on your business’s security practices as well as its website content (to ensure it’s not fraudulent). These verifications ensure that users can trust their information will remain secure when using your site or purchasing products from it, which means more sales!

Importance of SSL Certificate

SSL authentications are a significant piece of your site’s security. They’re used to encrypt the data that’s sent between you and your visitors, making it safer for them to use your site.

To utilize SSL encryption, you really want to purchase a SSL declaration from an Endorsement Authority (CA). The CA will then validate your identity so that others can be sure that you are who you say you are. Once the CA is satisfied, they’ll issue your site a certificate. This is what we call the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) because when someone visits your site, they’ll look at its public key to verify that it’s yours.

This process may sound simple, and if it’s done properly, it is! But there’s one major problem: if someone gets hold of your private key, they can decrypt any information encrypted with it! Anyone who steals your private key can impersonate your site and steal users’ passwords and other sensitive information.

To prevent this from happening, we recommend installing an SSL certificate so that visitors know they’re safe when visiting your site.
