You love your pup and he loves you right back. You may enjoy spending time cuddling with him and you may even let him sleep on your couch or bed. However, what you might not like about this arrangement is that he seems to leave a trail of doggy smell wherever he goes. Your comforter may no longer smell Downy fresh. Or, perhaps furniture or other things that aren’t easily washable are stinky. No one wants that. What are doggie parents to do when their whole house smells like a dog?
Eliminating Dog Odor
To begin, take all of your furniture apart, such as your pillows and blankets, and vacuum everything. If anything has removable slipcovers, unzip them and get them ready for the washer. Use the crevice tool of the vacuum to get in deep in the corners to remove all of the hair. Vacuum the floors, getting underneath all of the furniture and far into the corners where the hair collects.
Sweep and Mop
Don’t forget to clean your tile or wood flooring. Sweep your floors thoroughly with a broom or vacuum first. Next, mop your flooring with the appropriate cleaner of your choice.
Removing Odor From Carpets and Furniture
Next, gather a box of baking soda and a bottle of apple cider vinegar. Launder all of your cushion covers, blankets, and sheets, using a mixture of laundry detergent and ¼ cup apple cider vinegar.
Next, sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda on your mattress, furniture, and carpeting. Use a cleaning brush to get it deep into the surfaces. Allow the baking soda to sit overnight to soak up all of the odors. Logically, you could do this to the bed during the day instead, so that you could sleep on it at night.
In the morning, vacuum up all of the baking soda. Make up your bed with all of the washed linens. Put all of the slipcovers and blankets back.
Going through the above process will get rid of a great deal of the doggie smell. However, to rid your home of it completely, you might want to rent a carpet cleaning machine with an attachment for cleaning your furniture.
Be aware that skipping the above steps and going straight to the carpet cleaning is not likely to get rid of the smell. It may only make your house smell like a perfumed dog.
